Writing Consultation

Parent Support

Parents of children with learning differences have to act as advocates and experts, trying to explain to educators, therapists, and family members what their children need. Even when professional assessments and special education support are available, it often falls to parents to prioritize and monitor learning goals. I offer consultation sessions to help parents understand and communicate their child's needs more precisely.

RECEIVE SUPPORT THROUGH CONSULTATION.

You probably know more than anyone else about how your child thinks and what s/he struggles with in school...but it can be hard to know exactly where problems are coming from and what you can do about them. Parent consultation sessions can provide both practical feedback and emotional support as you navigate these uncharted waters.

LEARN TO WRITE AN "INSTRUCTION MANUAL" FOR YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING STYLE.

For many parents, the beginning of every school year or summer-camp session means another round of awkward communication with new teachers about their child's differences. I can help you plan and compose a letter that articulates your child's strengths, challenges, and needs concisely, in a way that  teachers and service providers can actually use. Teaching others how to empathize with and support your child can make a big difference in educational and social-emotional outcomes.

LEARN TO WRITE STRENGTH-BASED IEP GOALS.

Individualized Education Programs provide the main source of school support for different learners, but traditionally, their wording is deficit-based. Most IEP goals simply name a problematic symptom, like disruptive behavior, without actually identifying what's causing it, or what the proposed solution would be. I help parents to revise proposed goals, or develop new ones, that are more meaningful, measurable, usable, and strength-based.
